Back-to-school season means one thing for all of us: seating charts. New rosters, new personalities, and that familiar puzzle of who sits where. After 18 years in the classroom, I’ve made hundreds of these — so I built the tool I always wished I had, and I’m sharing it here for free.

What It Does

Paste your class list — one name per line — and the chart builds itself. From there, everything works the way a teacher thinks:

• Four room layouts: traditional rows, pairs for partner work, groups of 4 for stations and cooperative learning, and a U-shape for discussion days.
• Tap or drag to swap seats. Tap one student, tap another, and they trade places — which means it works beautifully on your Smart Board and iPad, not just a mouse.
• Shuffle with one click. Need a fresh arrangement for a new unit, or a randomized chart for test day? One button.
• Empty desks and extra students are handled. Unseat anyone with a tap; students without a seat wait in a small list until you place them.
• Make it yours. Add your class name, teacher name, room, and date, pick a color theme, and choose whether the front of the room is at the top or bottom of the chart.
• Save it in your browser and come back to it anytime — perfect for keeping a chart ready for a substitute.

When you’re happy with the arrangement, download it as a landscape PDF ready to print or leave in your sub folder, or as an editable Excel file where every seat is its own cell, so you can tweak names right in the spreadsheet.

A Word About Privacy (Please Read This Part)

I’m a teacher, so I’ll say this plainly: this tool does not collect, store, or send your students’ information anywhere. There is no account, no login, and no server on the other end reading your roster. Everything happens right in your own browser, on your own device. The Save button uses your browser’s local storage — meaning the chart is saved on your computer, not mine — and the PDF and Excel files are generated on your device the moment you click the button. Close the page, and your student names have never left your classroom.

That’s how every tool on this site works, and it’s how tools for teachers should work.

How to Use It in 30 Seconds

1. Paste your student names into the box (one per line).
2. Pick a layout and set your rows and columns.
3. Click Build Chart, then shuffle or drag until it feels right.
4. Download your PDF or Excel file — done.
