Keep your class on track, on time, and energized — right from your browser.
As a math teacher, I know how fast a class period flies by. Whether you’re timing a warm-up problem, a group activity, a test, or a transition between tasks, having a visible countdown on the board makes a real difference. Students stay focused, work with a sense of purpose, and transitions run smoother. The only problem? Most timer tools online are cluttered with ads, require downloads, or just don’t look good on a Smart Board.
So I built one myself — and now I’m sharing it with you, completely free.
What Is This Classroom Timer?
This is a free browser-based countdown timer designed specifically for classroom use. It runs directly on your WordPress page — no app to install, no account to create, no ads. Just open the page on your Smart Board, laptop, or iPad, set your time, and go.
How to Use It
Getting started takes about five seconds:
Quick Set buttons — Click 1 min, 2 min, 5 min, 10 min, 15 min, or 30 min for the most common classroom timers. One tap and it's ready.
Custom Time — Need exactly 12 minutes and 30 seconds for a quiz? Use the hour, minute, and second spinners to dial in any duration — including times over an hour for longer exams or project work sessions.
Start / Pause — Hit Start when you're ready. Hit it again to pause mid-activity if you need to stop and explain something.
+30 Seconds — Just like a microwave. Tap it any time to add 30 more seconds without resetting. Perfect when students need just a little more time to finish up.
Sound Alert — When time runs out, a gentle chime plays so you don't have to watch the screen constantly.
Flash Warning — The screen flashes red during the last 10 seconds, so students know to wrap up — even if they're not looking directly at the board.
Fullscreen Mode — Click Fullscreen and the timer fills the entire screen. Clean, large, and readable from the back row of any classroom.
Themes — Choose from Slate Blue, Calm Purple, Forest Green, Sunset, Ocean, Dark Mode, or Clean White to match your classroom vibe or board background.
Where Can You Use It?
Honestly, almost anywhere in your school day:
- Timed math warm-ups and number talks
- Group work and collaborative activities — display it on the projector so every group knows how much time is left
- Tests and quizzes — set it to 45 minutes or more using the hour option
- Brain breaks and transitions — a 2-minute timer does wonders for cleaning up stations
- Student presentations — keep speakers on time without awkward interruptions
- Test prep sprints — short focused bursts of 3–5 minutes work great for practice problems
- Reading time, writing time, independent work — anything where visible time awareness helps students self-regulate
It works great on a Smart Board, a projected laptop screen, an iPad, or even a classroom TV. The tap arrows inside the circle let you adjust the timer with a finger touch, no keyboard needed.
