Free Group Maker for Teachers

“Get into groups of four.” Six words that can cost you ten minutes of class time – and often produce the exact groupings you were trying to avoid.

I built the group maker I always wanted: paste your class list, pick how you want to group, and project balanced groups on the board in seconds. It’s free, there’s no login, and it handles the messy parts teachers actually deal with.

What This Tool Does

Three ways to group, because the purpose matters. Random is perfect for quick partner work and daily variety. Mixed Ability spreads different levels across every group – the research favors this for collaborative projects, and struggling students tend to gain the most from it. Similar Level clusters students working at the same point for short, targeted skill practice or intervention.

To use the two smarter options, just add a comma and a number after a name in your roster – 3 for ready to extend, 2 for on track, 1 for needs support. Here’s the part I care about most: those levels never appear on the screen or in the printout. The grouping is smart, but what your students see is just their names. No labels, no rankings, no awkwardness.

Everything else you actually need:

• Keep-apart pairs – list two students who shouldn’t work together, and the tool works to separate them automatically.
• Quick activity setups – one click configures groups for Think-Pair-Share, lab groups, project teams, station rotations, jigsaw, math discourse trios, skill groups, or peer tutoring pairs.
• Team roles – automatically assign Facilitator, Recorder, Timekeeper, Presenter, and other role sets so every student has a job.
• Full control after the shuffle – drag or tap to move students between groups, rename any group, lock a group so it survives a reshuffle, or add an empty one.

Your Roster Stays Yours

I’m a teacher, so let me be direct about this: this tool does not collect any information. There’s no account and no server reading your class list. Everything you type stays in your own browser on your own device – and if you use the Save button, that saved copy lives in your browser’s local storage, not on my website. Close the tab and your students’ names have never left your classroom.

A Few Teaching Tips

Keep groups temporary and change them often – flexible grouping works because the groups shift with the learning goal, not because they’re permanent. Use mixed-ability groups for open-ended, collaborative work where different perspectives help. Save similar-level groups for short bursts of targeted practice, then mix them back up. And if you’re assigning roles, take two minutes to explain what each role actually does before students start – it’s the difference between a group and a team.
