Teaching lab safety is required, but students tune out a list of rules quickly. Lab Safety Quest is a free lab safety game that turns safety review into a fast team competition. It runs right in your browser: no accounts, no downloads, no student devices.
How the game works
Split the class into a Red Team and a Blue Team. Each team gets its own question board, and both teams answer at the same time against the clock. Correct answers score points, and every third correct answer in a row earns a streak bonus. When time runs out, the scoreboard announces the winner.
What students practice
- GHS hazard symbols: flammable, corrosive, toxic, oxidizer, biohazard and more
- Physical, health, or environmental hazards: classifying each symbol
- Personal protective equipment (PPE): goggles, aprons, gloves, closed-toe shoes
- Safety equipment: eyewash station, safety shower, fire blanket, fume hood, SDS
- Emergency response: choosing the right equipment for a spill, fire, or splash
- Safe vs. unsafe practices: real lab rules students must follow
