Grade 8 Math Workbook Volume 1 | Practice + Answer Keys

Pinterest LinkedIn

Every September I meet a new group of eighth graders, and every September I see the same thing. Students who were fine in seventh grade suddenly hit a wall. Grade 8 is the year they meet functions, systems of equations, irrational numbers, and the Pythagorean Theorem, all in one year, and the state test in the spring covers every bit of it.

For a long time I pieced together practice for my students from a dozen sources. Some worksheets were too easy and some too hard. Some had no answer key, and some had a key full of mistakes. So I sat down and wrote the book I always wanted to hand them. Grade 8 Mathematics Practice Workbook, Volume 1 is the first half of that work: Units 1 through 4 of the Grade 8 year, written lesson by lesson and aligned to the New York State Next Generation Mathematics Learning Standards.

Every lesson: Remember box and Worksheet 1, Worksheet 2, and a full answer key.

What is in Volume 1

Volume 1 has 4 units, 52 lessons, 104 worksheets, and more than 1,200 practice questions. Every question is original, and complete answer keys are at the back of the book.

  • Unit 1: Integer Exponents & Scientific Notation (12 lessons). The laws of exponents, zero and negative exponents, and why the rules actually work, then scientific notation with real numbers like the distance to the sun and the size of a cell.
  • Unit 2: Transformations & Congruence (12 lessons). Translations, reflections, and rotations on the coordinate plane, sequences of rigid motions, congruence, parallel lines cut by a transversal, and the angles of a triangle.
  • Unit 3: Dilations, Similarity & the Pythagorean Theorem (13 lessons). Dilations and scale factor, similar figures, the angle-angle criterion, the Pythagorean Theorem and its converse, 3-D problems, and distance on the coordinate plane.
  • Unit 4: Linear Equations & Slope (15 lessons). One-step to multi-step equations, variables on both sides, equations with one, none, or infinitely many solutions, unit rate as slope, slope-intercept form, and writing the equation of a line.

How every lesson works

I kept the same structure in every lesson on purpose. When students know what is coming, they spend their energy on the math instead of figuring out the page.

  1. Remember box. The key ideas, the vocabulary, and a worked example in one shaded box at the top. When a student gets stuck halfway through a worksheet, this is where I send them first.
  2. Worksheet 1: Skill Practice. Straightforward practice of the skill, starting simple and getting harder. This is where accuracy gets built.
  3. Worksheet 2: Challenge & Reasoning. State-test-style multiple choice, multi-step and real-world problems, an error-analysis question where students find and fix another student’s mistake, and a closing question that asks them to explain their thinking.

The error-analysis questions are my favorite part. In my classroom, the fastest way to fix a misconception is to let students catch it in someone else’s work first. A student who writes 23 = 6 on a quiz will often spot it right away when it is “a student named Jordan” who made the mistake.

Room to work, and answers you can trust

Lower-level students get lost on crowded pages, so I gave every question real space underneath to show the steps. The pages are a full 8.5 x 11 inches, and lessons run three to five pages so nothing is squeezed.

The answer keys are organized by unit, lesson, and worksheet. Many answers show the key step, and the multiple-choice answers often explain why the wrong choices are wrong. Every answer in the book was checked by computing it independently. As a teacher, I know how much one wrong answer in a key can shake a student’s confidence, and I did not want that in this book.

Who this book is for

  • Students in Grade 8, or students finishing Grade 7 who want a head start over the summer.
  • Parents who want clear, organized practice at home, with a key they can check against.
  • Teachers and tutors who need classwork, homework, intervention, or test review that matches the New York standards.
  • Homeschool families looking for the first half of a complete Grade 8 math course.

I wrote part of this book with my own daughter in mind. She starts 8th grade next year, and I wanted her to have something she could work through early, at her own pace, and walk into class feeling ready.

How I would use it

At home: one lesson every two or three days is a comfortable pace. Read the Remember box together, let your child do Worksheet 1 alone, then check it with the key before moving to Worksheet 2.

In class: Worksheet 1 works well as classwork after a mini-lesson, and Worksheet 2 makes a strong homework assignment or a next-day warm-up. The error-analysis and “explain your thinking” questions are great for partner talk.

Before the state test: the Standards Alignment chart at the front shows exactly which lessons cover each standard, so you can go straight to the skills a student needs.

What about Volume 2?

The full Grade 8 year turned out to be more than 460 pages, which is too thick for a paperback to hold up well in a backpack. So I split it into two volumes. Volume 2 covers Units 5 through 8: Systems of Linear Equations, Functions & Volume, Statistics, and the Number System. Together, the two volumes cover every Grade 8 standard.

Common questions

Is it only for New York students?
No. It is aligned to the New York State Next Generation standards, but the Grade 8 topics are the same ones taught in most states: exponents, transformations, similarity, the Pythagorean Theorem, and linear equations. Any eighth grader can use it.

Does it include answers?
Yes. Every question in the book has an answer in the keys at the back, organized by unit and lesson.

Do I need Volume 1 before Volume 2?
Volume 1 follows the order most schools teach in, so it is the natural place to start. If your student’s class is already in the second half of the year, Volume 2 stands on its own.

If you have questions about the book, or you use it with your students, I would love to hear how it goes. Leave a comment below.
