The Daily Math Puzzle: A Wordle for Numbers

Every day, a brand-new hidden equation is waiting for you. Can you crack it in six tries?

If you have ever lost half an hour to Wordle, you already know how this works – but this time it is all numbers. After 18 years of teaching math, I built this daily puzzle to give students (and teachers, and honestly anyone who likes a good brain teaser) one satisfying little challenge to solve each day. There is a new one every morning, it is completely free, and there is nothing to sign up for.

How to Play

The goal is to find the secret math equation. Here is the whole game in four steps:

1. Look at the clue. Above the board, you will see how many boxes the equation has and what it equals. That is your starting point.
2. Type a true equation using the number pad, then press Enter. Your guess has to be a complete, correct equation – something like 12 + 7 = 19.
3. Read the colors. Each box changes color to give you a hint:
   • Green means the symbol is correct and in the right spot.
   • Yellow means the symbol belongs in the equation, but somewhere else.
   • Gray means that symbol is not in the equation at all.
4. Use the clues to zero in on the answer. You have six tries to solve it. Get it right, and you keep your streak alive!

Why It Is a Perfect Classroom Warm-Up

I designed this to be more than a time-killer. Solving the daily equation is a genuine workout in number sense, mental math, and logical reasoning – the same skills we spend all year building. Here is how teachers are using it:

• The five-minute bell-ringer. Put the puzzle on the smartboard as students walk in and solve it together as a class. It wakes up their math brains before the lesson even starts.
• A daily routine that builds number fluency. Because there is a new puzzle every day, it becomes a habit – and habits are where real fluency comes from.
• Fast finishers and early birds. Students who finish early get a challenge that actually makes them think, instead of busywork.
• A friendly competition. The streak counter and shareable results turn it into a low-stakes game the whole class can rally around. Who can keep the longest streak going?
